Everything we know about the new Tom Cruise action movie Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to come and see the new, all-action blockbuster starring Tom Cruise! Yes, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning comes skydiving into Cineworld on May 21st, and this eighth film in the series promises to be an absolute cracker. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the movie sees Ethan Hunt and his IMF buddies embark on yet another daring assignment, and, as depicted in the trailer below, old Cruisey pulls off some of his most incredible stunts to date.

But what else do we know about MI8? Strap in as we take a closer look at this exciting new release…

It’s one of the most expensive films ever made

The Final Reckoning reportedly cost a massive $400million (£310million) to make, which ranks it right up there as one of the most expensive movies in history. While that price tag can partly be attributed to long delays in filming caused by the Covid pandemic, it’s probably fair to say that quite a hefty sum was spent on the movie’s awesome stunts (read more about those below). The Final Reckoning’s budget dwarfs that of the next most expensive Mission: Impossible film, Dead Reckoning, which cost $291million (£225million). Mind you, neither instalment comes close to the priciest movie of all time, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which, not adjusting for inflation, cost an astonishing $447million (£346million).

We’re excited about the plot

So, what’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning about? Details are still fairly sketchy at this point, though we have managed to put some of the pieces together to form a picture of sorts. It appears that the movie is set two months after the events of Dead Reckoning Part One (note that The Final Reckoning was originally going to be called Dead Reckoning Part Two before that idea was scrapped). You may recall that, in that film, Ethan Hunt and co were battling a dangerous AI villain known as ‘The Entity’. Well, judging by the trailer for the new movie, along with the snippets of information we’ve collated, Hunt – now in prison – reluctantly agrees to team up with the government in a bid to defeat their common enemy. The clip shows him connecting to some sort of VR headset, which presumably means he’s going to face The Entity head-on. There have been rumours that this will be the last movie in the Mission: Impossible series – and a scene in the trailer where Hunt asks Luther to trust him “one last time” seems to back up this theory.

The stunts look amazing

Just when you think Tom Cruise can’t surprise you anymore, he does something that leaves you totally gobsmacked. And the 62-year-old actor – famous for doing his own stunts – pulls out all the stops in this new Mission: Impossible film. In one scene, he clings to the side of a vintage plane as it twists and turns hundreds of feet above the ground – a stunt that left Cruise himself breathless. “When you stick your face out [of an airplane], going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen,” he told Empire. “So, I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit.”

Some of our favourite characters are back

One of the reasons why we love the Mission: Impossible franchise so much is because the people in it are so likeable. So, we were pleased to see that Tom Cruise will once again be joined by series stalwarts Simon Pegg (as technical field agent Benji Dunn) and Ving Rhames (as computer expert Luther Stickell), along with more recent additions such as Hayley Atwell (as former thief turned IMF agent Grace) and Pom Klementieff (as the French assassin Paris). Appearing on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast last year, Pegg was full of praise for the new movie, and Tom Cruise. “I’ve just finished shooting. I've seen it. It's bananas. It's absolutely bananas,” he said. “What he does in this one, it boggles the mind. I think this one is the best one ever. And I'm not just saying that because it's, like, ‘Oh, you've got to say that.’ It’s going to be great."

This is the director’s fourth Mission: Impossible film

The Final Reckoning is the fourth Mission: Impossible movie to be written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the US filmmaker having already worked on Rogue Nation (MI5), Fallout (MI6) and Dead Reckoning Part One (MI7). McQuarrie has also lent his talents to a number of other Tom Cruise releases, including Valkyrie, The Mummy, Edge of Tomorrow, Top Gun: Maverick (all as writer) and Jack Reacher (as writer and director). And in a 2015 interview with Deadline, he shed light on why he loves working with the movie icon. “He’s always looking for a challenge, a new way to involve the audience firsthand in an experience they couldn’t otherwise have,” he said of Cruise. “He’s at heart an entertainer and that’s always first and foremost in our minds. The audience is in the room with us during every line, in a script meeting, through every moment of pre-production, production and editing. He really wants people to come to the movies and have a good time and part of that philosophy is doing things in the most photo-realistic way possible.”
