Universal have been teasing us munchkins about this trailer for a long ol’ time. But the trailer is here and…What is this Feeling? Pure emotional agony waiting for one of the upcoming 2025 movies I – Cineworld's resident blog writer – am most excited about.
Watch the trailer below and read on for all the moments that left me crying for a multitude of reasons. I’m nothing if not A Sentimental (wo)Man.
The moment we hear the iconic Defying Gravity note…but different
Glinda rushes out into the night, the wind in her perfect blonde hair, demanding that Elphaba come in before the monkeys spot her.
Already I’m clutching at my chest – and then, that iconic note from Defying Gravity is heard, effortlessly delivered by Cynthia Erivo, but, of course, we’re no longer carried by the buzz of the Emerald City. The note is different, the tone of the film set to be much darker. Chills. The first welling of tears, because oh my god, finally we’re getting new content from Wicked: For Good!
Glinda putting on her crown in her pink bubble dress
The significance of seeing Glinda looking in the mirror, putting on her crown in her pink dress is not lost on me. This is the first outfit we see Glinda in right at the start of Wicked, floating down in her bubble and announcing to Munchkin Town that the Wicked Witch of the West is dead. So obviously the idea of seeing this scene then play out chronologically in Wicked: For Good is instantly incredibly emotional for Wicked stans.
Seeing Fiyero for the first time – whose side are you on, pal?
Look, I’m going to admit every shot of Jonathan Bailey gets a small scream and tears from me, because Jonathan Bailey. And Fiyero was the character he was born to play. But seeing him kitted out in the Emerald City guards uniform is particularly bittersweet (even as a long time fan of the musical who therefore knows what's coming). Whose side are you on, pal, and why is it the wrong one?!
All the nods to Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz
Of course, it’s there in the original stage show, but it’s no less exciting to see all the glimpses of Dorothy, the yellow brick road, and the rest of her gang. We get shots of Cynthia Erivo’s claws resting on the broken yellow brick road, Dorothy’s silver slippers, as well as the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. It’s all just very exciting and beautiful and emotional!
Hearing the first line of For Good sang by Ariana Grande
Some of the teaser material has already given us some soundbites of For Good, which is arguably the biggest number in Act Two of Wicked, a duet sang between Elphaba and Glinda. All about their friendship and how it quite literally changed them for the better, obviously hearing it in the first Wicked: For Good trailer was going to send me over the edge.
Glinda is returning to the tower where we left her and Elphaba at the end of the first film. It’s reflective, she’s in her pink dress (!!!), and of course Ariana’s vocals deliver. Shivers!
The first looks at Glinda and Fiyero’s wedding are stunning
Again, it’s bittersweet, because, c’mon, Fiyero, this is not the woman you love! Equally, though, Glinda is an absolute ethereal, magical fairy princess dream walking down the aisle. Seriously, the cinematography is stunning – but I expected nothing less after how utterly gorgeous the sets and effects were in Wicked: Part One.
And a brooding shot of Fiyero doesn’t hurt either. All the feelings!
What is this scene showing The Wizard, Elphaba, and Glinda dancing?
Someone tell me what this shot is where the three are back in The Wizard’s personal chambers and there are technicolour disco lights and…dancing??? Honestly, I can’t place it in the original story, but I’m excited and emotional, even if we’re seeing it out of context. It just looks like a rare, carefree moment for Elphaba and The Wizard.
Every shot of Elphaba and Glinda, to be quite honest
Yes, the whole story in many ways is about the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, but Part Two is definitely really honing in on that, and there are just so many beautiful shots of the pair of them that made my heart soar in the trailer. Including the beautiful moment where they’re surrounded by pink lights, just floating together on two joined broomsticks. Female friendship is just the best.
When Fiyero said “I have changed” – for the better?!
All the motifs of the For Good lyrics sent me feral, but I loved the exchange between Fiyero and Elphaba where he goes from turning his gun on Elphaba to revealing he is, in fact, on her side. Elphaba says, “For a while there I thought you’d changed” and, in his smoldering voice, Fiyero says, “I have changed.” Swoon!
“You’re the only friend I ever had.”
I’m making space for Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship for an eternity. In response to Elphaba’s, “You’re the only friend I ever had”, Ariana’s immense comedic timing with the delivery of “And I’ve had so many friends, but you’re the only one that mattered"? Immaculate. Put it on my tombstone.
Elphaba summoning her broom is the new mic drop moment
One of the final scenes of the trailer sees Elphaba in the disco lights room, stating, “I’m off to see the Wizard”, reaching out her hand and her broom flying slickly into her hand. It’s badass, it’s iconic, and it’s giving the equivalent of a mic drop. And here you’ll find my once again screaming at the screen.
Arriving at Cineworld on November 21, the first full trailer has certainly left all of us kicking our silver slippers with excitement. The countdown is on!
