F1 accelerated onto the big screen last week, with Box Office earnings so far reving up to $144 million globally. Starring Brad Pitt, a fictional Formula One driver is pulled out of retirement to mentor a cocksure rookie and save the failing APXGP team. For fans of the real deal, the film also fatures real-life F1 teams and drivers, including Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, who gains a producer credit.
Want to know what it feels like to be in the driver's seat? Well, as well as being able to book to watch it in a number of special formats, including 4DX and ScreenX, we sat down with Damson Idris who plays driver prodigy Joshua Pearce, and Kerry Condon, starring as technical director of the team Kate McKenna.
Brad Pitt and Damson Idris learnt to drive up to 180mph
Capturing the true spirit of Formula One racing was essential, and this movie saw both Brad Pitt and Damson Idris buckled into the driving seat. No stunt doubles necessary, Iris revealed that they had to drive and act at 180mph, struggling to "look cute" and express his lines effectively through a helmet that only showed his eyes. The best part? He had to deliver lines at certain points in the track, and if they didn't get the right take, he'd have to drive all the way around the circuit before going again. In conclusion, "Don't get your lines wrong, don't get your eyes wrong."
No ego here, Brad Pitt gives 110%
From driving 180mph to giving 110% as a scene partner. Kerry Condon that he's a very relaxed guy who adapts in the moment, while Iris described him as a "sniper". "He is so precise with his choices, but there is a freeness to it as well. He kind of just floats into a scene, and it's so effortless." In fact, Iris learnt a ton from Pitt as a younger actor himself. They also shared that Brad Pitt wasn't one to keep himself to himself. Between scenes, he got involved and shared, "giving it all, even off camera."
